BURNSALL'S Remembrance Sunday commemorations this weekend will include the laying of a wreath in memory of a First World War soldier who died aged 32 in 1918, leaving behind a wife and six children.

Private John Thomas Ideson, who was born in Howgill, Bolton Abbey, joined up in 1917, saw active service in France and became a prisoner of war in 1918, after first being reported missing. Two months later, his father received a letter informing the family he had died in hospital and had been buried in a prisoner of war cemetery in Munster, Germany.

He left behind him his wife, Lilian, from Grassington, and their six children. After the war, Pte Ideson's body was reburied in Cologne Southern Cemetery.

Members of Pte Ideson's family, including Hartlington resident Nelly Daggett, will attend Sunday's Act of Remembrance when his eldest great grandchild, Dorothy Newall will lay a wreath in his memory. Wreaths will also be laid on behalf of Burnsall School, the British Army, the RAF and the US Army.

Councillor Richard Foster, North Yorkshire's ward member for Wharfedale, will also lay a wreath on behalf of the parishes of Appletreewick, Burnsall, Hartlington and Thorpe.

Sunday's Act of Remembrance will take place at 10.45am at the war memorial in Burnsall's St Wilfrid's churchyard. Earlier, at 9.30am there will be a service of Holy Communion in the church, followed at around 10.25am by coffee and biscuits as people assemble for the Act of Remembrance.
