THIEVES smashed their way through a window of Booths Supermarket in Settle in the early hours of Sunday morning and got away with an ATM machine.
Pictures published on social media show the entrance area of the Kirkgate store littered with glass and debris following the break-in, which took place at around 4am.
Residents expressed their shock at the incident with one saying: "I know every community has crime but for our little community this is off the scale. Whoever did this knew exactly what to do and how but how they got it out beggars belief. Shocking."
A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: "Officers are investigating after an ATM was stolen from a commercial property on Kirkgate in Settle. The offence took place at around 4am on Sunday, November 12.
"Anyone who has any information on the incident is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police and quote reference 12230215107. Alternatively information can be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
A spokesperson for Booths Supermarket said: "Booths are liaising with police in relation to this incident . Booths Settle continues to trade as usual with no disruption to customers."
