Quaker Services: Quakers in Airton have regular quiet meetings for worship every Sunday at 2pm in the ancient Quaker Meeting House by the Green in Airton, on Calton Lane BD23 4AE. Worship lasts for an hour. All are welcome to this the earliest place of non-conformist worship dating from the 1600’s. Refreshments in the Barn follow each meeting. Church news: There will not be a service at St.Andrew’s on Sunday, January 7 but people are invited to attend a Parish Epiphany Communion Service at St John’s, Cononley, starting at 10am. There will be a mid-week Holy Communion service at St.Andrew’s starting at 9.30am on Wednesday (10th).

St Andrew’s is open to visitors on most days, when the building is not in use, from about 10am until about 2pm.

Knit & Natter: The group will meet on Tuesday (9th), between 1.30pm and 3.30pm in the upstairs room at Farnhill Institute. People are invited to come along with their knitting, crochet or stitching, or just to have a chat - all are welcome. Tea, coffee and biscuits served. £2.

Giggleswick

Church news: St Alkenda’s. At church we start 2024 by celebrating Epiphany on Sunday, January 7 with a service of Holy Communion at 9.30am and Epiphany Carols at 6pm. Please come and join in the worship and fellowship. After a short break mid week activities have started again. Each Wednesday morning there is a service of Holy Communion at 9.30am.

Mothers’ Union: On January 10 Giggleswick with Settle Mothers’ Union meets in Limestone View at 2pm. Members look forward to seeing little people, aged 0 to 4 years, with their carers at Stepping Stones on Thursday 11th in Settle Parish Church from 10 to 11.30am.

Church news: St Oswald’s church held its very first ‘Live’ or ‘Walking Nativity’ recently where costumed actors moved according to the script. Live animals need persuasion but the donkey, played by Delta, seemed happy inside the church and snorted contentedly. Two hens and two sheep completed the scene. Thanks to Katie and James and family for arranging and setting up the event which included wonderful music and lighting and to the cast of nine and all who provided hot chocolate. It shows what can be done on the Helwith Bridge slate floor, it’s similar to the Cosmati Pavement in Westminster Abbey. Eleven children and 36 adults thoroughly enjoyed the event.

A couple of days later the annual Christingle was held, a short service where Jane spoke about the work of the Children’s Society. Everyone got to complete a Christingle with sweets – thanks to Robert and Jane for preparing them and the great coffee cup holders. Last year there was a longer ‘Christingle Workshop’ icing biscuits and writing cards but the shorter service worked well as there was a busy ‘Messy Advent’ earlier in the month.

A service of evening prayer will be held in St. Oswalds church on Sunday at 3pm with prayers for peace in 2024 .

Church news: Settle Parish Church. The united service’ for all three parishes of the Castleberg Benefice led by Revd Julie Clarkson last Sunday, New Year’s Eve, was a chance to exchange festive greetings and to take time to ponder about our faith, our lives and what may lie ahead in 2024.

Family Worship at 11am on Sunday 7 January. We encourage all families, whatever shape or size to give these monthly, family friendly services a try. A warm welcome is promised and there’s refreshments afterwards too.

Bacon Butties: Saturday, January 6 from 10am ‘til 1pm, when Chris will be busy in the kitchen cooking our popular bacon butties. All locally sourced produce, homemade cakes and veggie options too.

Pop-up Pantry: After a short Christmas break Settle’s Pop Up Pantry will open, as usual, tomorrow, Friday, January 5, 11am ‘til 12noon. The cupboard in the church porch has been kept well stocked over the festive season. We are most grateful to everyone who has supported the ‘pantry’ so generously during 2023. Sadly there is still a need for this facility in our community so all donations will be very gratefully received.

Stepping Stones: The group for families with children from 0 to 4, led by members of Giggleswick with Settle Mothers’ Union re -opens on Thursday, January 11at 10am.

RSPB Group: Our next meeting will be at the Skipton Baptist Church Hall on Wednesday, January 10, at 7.30pm and the presentation will be by Julian Sykes. The topic is ‘Lynx and Lammergeiers in Andalusia’.

Skipton Retired Men’s Forum: Meeting on Tuesday, January 9 in the Soroptimist Rooms on Otley Street. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available from 10am and at 10:30am Andrew Wilcocks will give a presentation on “RHS Harlow Carr”. Members and visitors welcome.

Friends of the Craven Museum: Meeting at 7:30pm on Wednesday January 10 in the Education Room of Skipton Town Hall (entry through the Stage door on Museum Walk). The meeting features a talk by Chris Lunnon entitled “Embsay Priory and the early history of Embsay”. All welcome, non-members fee £3.

Skipton Film Club: Fans of film noir are in for a treat when Skipton Film Club brings The Night of the Hunter to the town’s Plaza Cinema on Sunday, January 7. Staring Robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters and Lillian Gish, the film, directed by Charles Laughton, received a poor reception when it was brought out in 1955, but has since become revered as one of the classics of American cinema.

Mitchum gives arguably his greatest and most menacing performances as a criminal who disguises himself as a preacher to marry a widow, played by Shelley Winters, in order to get his hands on the treasure looted by her late husband. He has “Love” and “Hate” tattooed on his knuckles - he’s that kind of guy!

Paul Valentine, of Skipton Film Club, said: “What makes the film so powerful is the unique visual style that Laughton brings to the telling of the story. Mitchum’s menacing pursuit of the widow’s children takes the viewer into an almost fairytale sense of fear and wonder.

“Words cannot do this film justice - it’s fair to say it will be a fantastic experience on a big screen in a brand new print. It’s a must for any film lover and we are proud to have it as our next screening.”
