Rector’s message: On this fourth Sunday after Easter, we are still in the immediate aftermath of the death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. However, although the risen Christ is still walking amongst his disciples, Jesus is now preparing them for his ascension into heaven. He assures them that they will not be abandoned but, instead, they will be guided and comforted by the Holy Spirit. Job puts it slightly differently in the Old Testament reading by proclaiming “I know that my Redeemer lives”. Despite all that we have to endure, we never walk alone.

Ascension Day Service: There will be an Ascension Day Service in the Priory on Thursday, May 9, at 7pm.

Date for your diary: Bolton Abbey Show, Saturday, May 11.

This presents a rare opportunity for local players to work alongside professionals to perform Mozart’s Serenade in E flat, K375 for wind octet. The choir will sing both sacred and secular music, including Stanford’s beautiful work for soprano solo and chorus, The Blue Bird. Other works are by Palestrina, Tchaikovsky, Saint Saens, Brumel, and two madrigals, one from England and one from Spain. The concert is in the Priory Church, Bolton Abbey, at 2.15pm and you are invited to hear some of our rehearsal from 1.30pm. Admission is free (donations welcome). The programme lasts for about 50 minutes. Parking is free in the village car park for concert-goers and is available at the church for those less able to walk from the village.

Horton-in-Ribblesdale

Service: The North Yorkshire Civic Service 2024 was held recently in St Oswald’s church. A big thank you is extended to everyone for moving tables and chairs, hoovering round and arranging flowers on the Saturday, and for ringing the bells and serving refreshments on the Sunday. It was lovely to have blue skies after many weeks and even Penyghent came out to play. Langcliffe Singers said they were pleased to sing at the Civic Service and thanked the ladies of the church who provided them with hot drinks and delicious cakes. They were very grateful and felt very spoiled. Thanks to the Councillor David Ireton, chairman of North Yorkshire Council and his wife Sandra for choosing such great hymns for everyone to sing. It was daunting for everyone at St Oswald’s to be asked to host the Civic Service for a hundred people but it was a wonderful occasion of celebration and turned out to be a great venue. People really enjoyed the journey from Scarborough, Hartlepool, Darlington, Keighley and Knaresborough, especially those with chauffeurs. Thanks to the Golden Lion and Village Hall for opening their toilets early too. There were quite a lot of cars around what with a walking festival on and the local car overflow carpark field closed due to mud, so there was a bit of a traffic flow problem but thanks to everyone for their patience and goodwill. With Gift Aid the collection was £690 and was shared between St Oswald’s church and Candlelighters, the chair’s charity this year. The Very Rev John Dobson DL, the Dean of Ripon said it was lovely to be with everyone at Horton-in-Ribblesdale and what a great occasion it was, both for parish and county. He congratulated everyone on getting things organised so well, and providing such a warm and welcoming spirit. A service of Holy Communion will be held in St Oswald’s church on Sunday at 10.30am.
