NEWLY-installed 'larger capacity' litter bins in Skipton will not have to be emptied as often and will not overflow on busy days, says North Yorkshire Council.

The black bins which have appeared in the town will also save money and mean streets looking less cluttered, says the council - although some people have complained they look ugly.

Town councillor Lewis Morgan said: "I feel for people in a wheelchair and those with pushchairs or a buggy who finds one blocking the path."

North Yorkshire Council says it worked with Skipton Town Council, Skipton Heritage action zone and Skipton BID on the project, which was funded by Skipton Town Council.

North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for street scene, Cllr Keane Duncan, said: “We constantly review our waste service to ensure it is as efficient and effective as possible. This includes providing litter bins with additional capacity, such as the bins in Skipton and other locations across the county.

“They do not have to be emptied as often and will not overflow on busy days. As well as saving money this also cuts down on the number of bins needed in each area, leaving streets looking less cluttered.

“We will continue to look at solutions such as this to help reduce operating costs and maintain litter-free streets across the county.”
