LANDSCAPE and garden designer Sonja Kalkschmidt, from Low Bentham is celebrating after winning gold at her first time at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show.

Sonja was awarded a gold medal in the container gardens section with her 'minimalist yet luxurious sanctuary designed to provide a tranquil escape from the hustle of contemporary corporate life.'

She said: "I´m over the moon with this medal, it would not have been possible without my team of over 70 people, especially local businesses, contractors, nurseries and volunteers from Cumbria, Yorkshire and Lancaster."

Sonja's 'Sanctum' garden aims to be a 'pod-like haven' that can be easily put together in a variety of locations and offering a 'blend of modern aesthetics and natural and calming elements'.

Its charred dark Abodo wood pods, serve both as a visual focal point and a tactile link to nature. The charred wood, known for its durability and eco-friendly properties, contrasts with the lush foliage and greenery, while a small water feature enhances the garden´s overall sensory appeal, says Sonja.

"My design philosophy centres on creating spaces that harmonise with nature while offering functional benefits. Sanctum’ embodies this ethos, showcasing how even the smallest of spaces can be transformed into a haven of tranquility and well-being," she says.
