TWO young women from Craven are set to undertake this weekend's UK Pretty Mudder challenge in York for charity in memory of their mothers.
Hannah Shelton, 18, of Cowling and Emily Butcher, 18 of Fleets, Rysltone both lost their mothers to cancer and are going to tackle the muddy 5K obstacle course together on Saturday ( June 30) to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
Hannah lost her mum, Jennifer, to cancer in November last year. She said: “I lost my mum when I was just 17 only six months after her initial diagnosis. It was a very quick, very cruel situation and we are doing this in the hopes that one day other families and other children will not have to go through this.
“Both Emily and I lost our mums due to cancer and it’s changed the course of both our lives. We’re so grateful to have each other as friends, not least because we can relate to what we’ve both been through. Not everyone has someone they can talk to about grief. We really want to encourage people to talk more, to share their experiences and increase the support network for everyone.”
Emily, who lost her mum, Katherine, to ovarian cancer, said: “I lost my mum when I was eight years old. One of the reasons I’m doing this is that mum did a fundraiser for cancer charities by completing the two oceans marathon in South Africa, so any physical challenge to raise much-needed funds and to support the vital work of charities reminds me of her.
“Cancer Research UK undertakes pioneering research and we want to support them in their work to make sure no-one leaves the world before it’s their time. We would be so grateful for any sponsorship people could spare.”
