A SKIPTON primary school is celebrating its journey from being placed into special measures to becoming a 'good' school.

In 2017 and again in 2019, Skipton Parish CoE Primary in Brougham Street was marked 'inadequate' by Ofsted and placed into special measures.

The school, which following its first Ofsted inspection since becoming a member of the Yorkshire Causeway Schools Trust, has now been graded 'good' in all areas, including its quality of education and leadership and management.

Headteacher, Lucy Peberdy, said: “The journey of our school from when it was placed in special measures in 2017 to now has been a long and challenging one. "I am so proud to lead such a dedicated team, who share my determination to make our school a place where everyone is empowered to be the best they can be."

She added: "I tried to explain to the lead inspector what it means to be 'Parish' and the only way I could come close, was by telling him we do everything from our hearts."

In their report, Ofsted inspectors, who spent two days at the school in June, said: "Pupils are happy at this caring and supportive school. Staff know the pupils and their families well. Every pupil is welcome and valued. There is a genuine sense of community within the school."

Inspectors found that the school has "high expectations for all pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND)" and that pupils behave well, are supportive of each other and are respectful to adults.

Inspectors commented that children at this school ‘feel safe’ and they noticed that wellbeing of both pupils and their families is treated as a priority. With the use of ‘mindfulness mentors’ and ‘well-being champions’ younger pupils are actively supported at playtimes.

In order to do better, the school has been told to make sure pupils embed their understanding of basic writing skills before moving on in the writing curriculum.

Jane Goodwin Chief Executive Yorkshire Causeway Schools Trust said: “I am so proud of what this school has achieved as part of the trust with the commitment and hard work of staff all pulling together for the benefit of our children. It is great that Ofsted have recognised Skipton Parish for the fantastic learning environment that it truly is”.

David Portlock, chair of the school's governors, said: "It (the Ofsted report) recognises the effort and dedication of everyone who is involved with Parish Primary School in providing excellent education and development for all of our children."
