LNER has become the first train operator in the UK to receive period positive workplace certification for its 'package for a friend' scheme.

The certification has been awarded by The Period Positive Workplace Coalition, a global group of health experts who work to achieve menstrual equality, in recognition of the scheme aimed at both customers and staff.

Launched earlier this year, the scheme offers access to free, organic TOTM period products onboard LNER trains, as well as at its stations and offices.

Research by the coalition found that 80 per cent of respondents had experienced a time when their period started unexpectedly, without access to care products. The research also showed that by becoming a period positive workplace and offering free care products to its workforce, employers can increase productivity and boost collaboration, providing a more inclusive and equal environment for all.

Tracey Barber, LNER’s senior employee experience partner, said: “Ensuring our customers are happy onboard and our people are comfortable at work is important to us. No one can be productive and creative without first feeling safe and secure. Providing free, environmentally friendly period products to anyone who needs them is just one way we can offer support and challenge period stigma.”

Jess Strait from The Period Positive Workplace Coalition said: "When organisations like LNER make the effort to meet the menstrual health needs of their employees, they're demonstrating not only their dedication to advancing gender equality in the workplace, but also their commitment to ensuring their employees can thrive at any time of the month. We are thrilled that LNER is now PPW-certified and leading the way for menstrual equity in the transportation sector."
