GIGGLESWICK School has said it will stand by its commitment to current and future families to absorb the cost of VAT following the government's announcement that the tax will be added to independent school fees from next year.

The independent school, near Settle, says it will only increase its fees in line with inflation.

Its current fees for a full boarder are £40,485 a year - which with VAT added would increase to £48,582.

Giggleswick School's Headmaster, Sam Hart, said: “By committing to absorb the impact of VAT on fees, Giggleswick School is making a proactive decision to continue to deliver the widest possible access to those who wish to pursue this form of education.

"While I understand that not all schools will be in the position to absorb VAT, my focus remains on ensuring Giggleswick School continues to thrive."

The school says its decision will not mean compromising on its quality of education and its focus on delivering exceptional outcomes for all pupils.

Giggleswick is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school for children aged two to 18 years old. Former pupils include English golfer Gary Wolstenholme and journalist and TV presenter, the late Richard Whiteley.
