HOBBY-horse racing and speed sheep shearing have been added to the already huge number of attractions at this year's Kilnsey Show.
Organisers of the Dales premier agricultural show, held in the shadow of Kilnsey Crag, on Tuesday, August 27, are confident the two added events will make the show even more of a great day out than usual.
Hobby-horse racing, fast becoming popular at equestrian events, involves participants, wearing hard hats, jodhpurs and Tweed jackets, switching a four-legged mount with a mop shaft and toy horse's head - a favourite with pony-mad children.
Open to both adults and children, there are classes for 'best turned out', and various jumping classes, as well as 'how high can my pony go'.
Entries can be made on the day, and hobby-horses will be available for those who don't have their own.
And, speed sheep shearing, also growing in popularity with young farmers, will be the last event of the day and will take place in the cattle tents at around 6.30pm.
The competition is the Yorkshire part of a three counties speed shearing contest, which is also taking place in Lancashire and Cumbria.
Meanwhile, say organisers, entries into all agriculture, produce and handicraft classes are doing very well, especially in the cattle classes where there is almost double - 140 - entries than last year.
Always a popular part of the show, visitors will be able to get up close with several different breeds, including highland, shorthorn and longhorn, and black and whites.
There will also be dozens of sheep classes, heavy horses, and equestrian events, including ridden classes. There will also be vintage tractors on show, exciting harness racing, stalls, a fairground, plenty to eat and drink, the ever popular Sheep Show, and birds of prey.
In the produce and horticulture section, there will be cakes, buns and homemade wines on show, with classes also for children.
Runners will take part in the Crag races - up Kilnsey Crag, as well as races sticking to the showground, and new for this year, a 500m race for under nines.
Show Chairman Chris Windle said: "It is going to be a very busy show with lots to see. I'd like to know where else you can and get 11 hours entertainment for just £13. This show has everything."
Early bird tickets are available until August 20. No dogs are allowed on the show ground. Find out more at: https://www.kilnseyshow.co.uk/
