A SKIPTON theatre group is launching a new choir as it prepares to celebrate its centenary year.

After producing quality musical productions for 100 years, the Skipton Musical Theatre Company is forming a new centenary anniversary choir - and is looking for members, whether seasoned performers or shower-singers.

Members say they are thrilled about the 'historic' addition to the company which will perform at various events throughout the year, including next year at its centenary gala.

The choir, says the group, will aim to be a vibrant and experienced group of singers, celebrating the rich musical heritage of Skipton and beyond.

And whether a seasoned singer or someone who wants to expand their vocal ability, you will have the opportunity to flex your vocal talent and develop as part of the choir.

The choir will sing contemporary music, popular songs, and tunes from films and musical theatre – all sung in harmony.

Its musical director is Sharon Wilson, who in the past has coached a choir in Russia, and will bring her expertise and passion to every rehearsal.

She said: “I’m thrilled to be part of this historic moment for Skipton Musical Theatre Company. After coaching choirs in Kenya and Russia, I have harboured ambitions to establish a choir in Skipton for a few years now.

"The opportunity to do so with SMTC was too good to miss. Why not join us."

Neil Wilnes, choir coordinator, added: “Joining the choir will be the highlight of the year for most, I’m sure. The camaraderie of SMTC members and the joy of singing together is truly a spectacular combination not to be missed."

Rehearsals take place every Thursday at 7.15pm at Skipton Baptist Church’s Family Room, Otley Street.

Meanwhile, rehearsals are well underway for the company's autumn production of Lionel Bart's award-wining musical, Oliver! which will be performed at Skipton Town Hall, from October 22 to October 26, with evening and matinee performances.

Jay Cundell Walker is the show director and Michael Gilroy is musical director, the same team behind the company's last year's sell out Calendar Girls The Musical.
