A SKIPTON pub has been named CAMRA’s Yorkshire Pub of the Year for the second year running.
The Beer Engine, on Albert Street, will share the accolade with Bridlington establishment, The Three B’s Micropub.
CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide 2024 describes The Beer Engine as a “well-established micropub in a tiny street between the town centre and the canal.”
It calls the pub’s ambience “friendly and welcoming,” and notes that well-behaved dogs are welcome.
The 17 entries for the award were visited by individual judges over the course of four months.
They were scored against criteria including quality and choice of real ale, style and décor, and service and value.
Adam Davies, one of the pub’s two directors alongside Steven Gregory, reminisced on the history of their ownership.
“The Beer Engine was started as a one-room micro pub ten years ago in May, which is our tenth birthday, by Janet Langton and Steve Banks,” he said.
“They sold it to us on the 21st of September 2020, between two lockdowns, so everyone thought we were mad!
“It will be four years on that date that we'll have had it.”
In early 2022, the pub expanded into the property next door.
The bar includes craft keg fonts, and the cask beers are stored in refrigerated cabinets behind the bar, while the keg products are stored in a separate cupboard.
Six handpumps dispense a variety of beers, with at least one blonde, pale ale, and dark beer permanently on tap, as well as a character beer.
CAMRA’s Yorkshire Regional Director, Kevin Keaveny, said: “The result of this year’s competition shows that micropubs continue to be popular with CAMRA members and discerning drinkers.
“We are recognising the efforts made by enthusiastic and hard-working management, and their staff.”
Julian Smith, MP for Skipton and Ripon, said: "The Beer Engine is an excellent pub.
"It is great to see them continuing to get the recognition they deserve.
"If you’re in the area, I would strongly recommend that you drop by to see it for yourself.
"I look forward to visiting again soon."
The Beer Engine will be presented with its framed certificate on a date to be arranged in September.
