USED coffee grounds and pods now have the chance for a second life as soil improver, packaging, or renewable energy, thanks to a recycling scheme introduced across North Yorkshire Council's household waste recycling centres (HWRCs).

The new service, which also accepts tea, milk, and hot chocolate pods, will be provided at  Skipton, but not at Settle.

Plastic and aluminium pods need to be collected separately, as they are recycled at different facilities.

North Yorkshire Council is collaborating on the scheme with Podback, a not-for-profit recycling service created and funded by leading coffee pod systems Nescafe Dolce Gusto, Tassimo, and Nespresso, along with coffee pod brands and retailers.

Pods will be sent to specialist recycling plants and turned into packaging, car components, and building products, while coffee grounds will be treated by anaerobic digestion to create soil improver and renewable energy.

North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for waste services, Cllr Greg White, said: "We are excited to be working with Podback to introduce another recycling stream at the HWRCs for residents."
