AN adaptation of one of Alfred Hitchcock's classic thrillers will mark the start of Skipton Little Theatre's new 2024/ 25 season.

For October, the theatre is presenting The 39 Steps, an Olivier and Tony Award-winning comedy adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock's classic spy thriller.

The 39 Steps is a fast-paced, hilarious parody that follows the adventures of dashing hero, Richard Hannay, played in the 1935 film by Robert Donat.

With his pencil moustache, Hannay finds himself caught in a web of espionage, murder, and romance as he races across Britain to crack a mysterious spy ring.

A spokesperson for Skipton Little Theatre said: "This brilliantly creative adaptation transforms Hitchcock's nail-biting thriller into a non-stop comedic romp. Watch in amazement as just five versatile actors bring to life over 100 characters in a tour-de-force of theatrical ingenuity.

"With quick changes, outrageous accents, and a dash of absurdity, The 39 Steps is a masterclass in comedic timing and stagecraft."

It is, added the spokesperson, 100 minutes of "non-stop action and humour."

They said: "Audiences will be taken on a journey filled with train chases, plane crashes, shadowy conspiracies, and, of course, the mystery of The 39 Steps.

"It's a loving tribute to the classic spy thriller genre that will keep viewers laughing while perched on the edge of their seats."

The 39 Steps began as a 1915 adventure novel by John Buchan, which was then adapted into the 1935 film by Alfred Hitchcock.

The stage version presented by Skipton Little Theatre and adapted by Patrick Barlow, premiered in 2005 and has since become a global theatrical phenomenon, winning Olivier, Tony, and Drama Desk awards.

The spokesperson said: "The play's unique charm lies in its clever deconstruction of the spy thriller genre and its celebration of the magic of theatre. "With minimal props and maximum imagination, it showcases the power of live performance to transport audiences into a world of adventure and intrigue."

The 39 Steps at Skipton Little Theatre, Craven Street, plays from October 1 to October 5. Evenings, 7.30pm and a Saturday matinee at 2pm.
