SKIPTON'S new 'library of things' is open for business - and from food mixers to guitars, there is something for every pressing task or hobby.
Share Skipton's library of things, in Newmarket Street, which has its grand, official opening on Saturday (September 7) has more than 200 donated items, covering DIY, gardening, household appliances, hobbies and crafts, sports and games, outdoors equipment, and mobility aids, and more.
Borrowing is easy and low-cost - items range from nothing at all for a pair of garden shears, to £25 for a medium-sized marquee. Borrowers first sign up as a member, which can be done online or in person. There is an online catalogue for members to browse and reserve before items are collected and returned after use. Items can be borrowed for a week, and extended if not reserved by someone else. Parking behind the library means members can collect and drop off items.
Angela Monaghan, trustee and volunteer, said “After so much hard work, we’re excited to finally be open for borrowing. I would like to thank our local communities for their enthusiastic support, many of whom have donated useful things to the library. And we couldn’t have done any of this without our brilliant volunteers, who are the power behind the library of things.”
Sam Healey, development officer, said “Borrowing things we need can save money, save on storage, and reduce waste and use of resources, so is good for individuals, the community and the planet. We want to encourage everyone to borrow not buy."
Other items in the library are handy decorators' steps- for just £1.90; a carpet cleaner, for £6.25; an air fryer, for £2; and a tile cutter for £4.25. A Bosch lawnmower is just £2; a bike box £19.75; and a canvas camp bed £2.
Current opening hours are Tuesdays, 4pm to 7pm; and Saturdays 10am to 1pm. For more information, including membership, volunteering and donations, go to www.shareskipton.org, email Sam on hello@shareskipton.org, or follow on Facebook and Instagram @ShareSkipton.
