TALKS and guided tours will take place in Skipton this weekend as part of the country-wide heritage open days.
On Saturday (September 14), Skipton Civic Society is staging 'old roads of Skipton'. Led by the town's mayor, Claire Nash, the two hour walk will start from Holy Trinity Church, and will look at the fords, bridges and roads that connected Skipton and Craven from Roman times through the eras of drovers, canals and toll roads.
Conservation expert Sue Wrathmell, who has been researching High Street buildings for the government-funded Heritage Action Zone (HAZ) programme, will lead High Street tours on Friday (September 13), from 2pm to 3pm, and on Sunday, again from 2pm to 3pm, starting from outside the town hall.
On Sunday morning, there will be a tour of Skipton's old schools in Otley Street and Newmarket Street. Ten former schools will be included, along with some former associates, such as the Kipling family, and Abraham Shackleton, ancestor of the famous explorer, Ernest Shackleton. It will start from the town hall at 10am and last until 11.30am.
A civic society stall at the side of the town hall on Saturday and Sunday, from 10am-2pm will host a display about Skipton’s town centre buildings.
