Skipton Town Hall has launched its final exhibition of the year, with contemporary lace taking centre stage.

'Curiosity: Contemporary Lace by 98 Lace' features works from the 98 Lace collective.

Coming from various textile backgrounds, 98 Lace's members are united by the goal of promoting contemporary lace and making it more audience-accessible.

Set up in London in 1998, the collective's members are spread throughout Britain, including Yorkshire, and the exhibition showcases the projects they have undertaken in recent years.

Some artworks in the exhibition are directly inspired by items from the Craven Museum collection - including a Brumfitt Cabinet, Sylko cotton reels, and Ebolton Cave material.

The exhibition features work celebrating 78 Derngate, the Charles Rennie Mackintosh-designed house in Northampton; and a group piece created for the Lace Guild's competition theme of ‘Commonwealth,’ depicting Oliver Cromwell's role in the Civil War in a way that links to Skipton's own history.

Contemporary lace, as showcased in the exhibition, sees traditional lacemaking rules being manipulated, stretched, or even broken to create something new and different.

98 Lace's members mix techniques to achieve the desired effect, incorporating elements from other crafts and using a range of materials not traditionally used in lacemaking - including wire, recycled plastic strips, paper thread, and textured threads.

For those interested in learning more about the art of lacemaking, 98 Lace member Christine Gibson will be conducting two short exhibition tours on Saturday, November 2 at the Town Hall.

While the tours are free, tickets must be booked in advance via skiptontownhall.co.uk or through the Box Office in the Town Hall’s Visitor Centre.

The exhibition, which is also free to enter, will run until December 23.

The exhibition gallery is open Monday to Saturday, from 9.30am to 4.30pm.
