This September, our Year 7 pupils embarked on an exciting residential trip to PGL’s Caythorpe Court, designed to ease their transition into senior school and help them build strong connections with their peers. Over three days, pupils were immersed in thrilling outdoor activities, pushing boundaries, conquering fears, and forming lasting friendships. The heart of the Lincolnshire countryside provided the perfect backdrop for our Year 7s to bond with fellow pupils and teachers through a variety of exhilarating challenges. This trip gave them an early taste of adventure, camaraderie, and independence, all within the supportive environment of the school community.

Activities ranged from axe throwing and abseiling to canoeing and survival skills, with every moment packed with adrenaline and fun. For many, it was their first time trying such daring activities, and the sense of accomplishment they felt after each challenge was evident. One pupil remarked, “I had so much fun and feel proud I got the axe in the target.”

A standout moment for many was the "survivor" challenge, where pupils learned bushcraft skills such as fire-making and building wilderness shelters. Working in teams and against the clock, they had to figure out how to stay warm and dry using only the materials they could find—effective planning and communication were key.

Another highlight was the orienteering challenge, “Passport to the World.” In this activity, pupils navigated the grounds in the dark, using only a map to find various flags. This fun yet educational task helped them develop problem-solving skills, and by the end of the evening, they had gained not only navigational knowledge but also a better understanding of their own strengths and abilities.

After their action-packed days, the pupils stayed in a tent village, giving many their first taste of camping—though with proper beds! With no electricity, it was the perfect blend of adventure and simplicity, encouraging the children to disconnect from technology and truly connect with each other. Evenings were spent toasting marshmallows, sharing stories, and singing songs under the stars—a memory that will surely stay with them for years to come.

Reflecting on the experience, the Head of Year 7 commented, “Our Year 7 boys and girls embraced this opportunity, impressing us with their ‘hoc age’ spirit by giving their best and making new friends. I’m proud of their strong start and excited to see what they will achieve next.”
