THE stunning and historical Church of St Michael the Archangel in Kirkby-in-Malhamdale, will be the setting for the music of John Denver, Bob Dylan and Cat Stevens in November.

An evening with singer-songwriter, Chris Bannister, on the evening of Saturday, November 9, is a continuation of live music and arts events to be held in the 15th century parish church for Malhamdale.

Over the last year, the church has hosted a number of concerts and musical events, ranging from the Voices of Craven community choir, Ben Saunders and his recital of organ and accordion music; to folk music with local singer and guitarist Martin Francis.

The Rev Sue McWhinney, associate priest of the Upper Aire Benefice, which includes Gargrave, Coniston Cold and Kirkby Malham, said: "The beautiful setting of St Michael’s, together with its great acoustic, have been much appreciated by performers and audience alike."

The distinctive vocal style of Chris Bannister, who hails from the North of England, has left to him being compared to the great American singer, John Denver, whose hits include Leaving on a Jet Plane, Rocky Mountain High and Back Home Again.

Around 14 years ago Chris started performing a show in tribute to the American star, but from the very start was determined not to copy the visual aspect of John’s performances but to maintain his own identity when playing the worldwide hits.

Over the last two years Chris has been performing to audiences across the world, from Australia, the USA, Japan and across Europe bringing his love of the songs of John Denver to a much wider audience.

Rev McWhinney said: "Chris is currently 'Back Home Again' and after visiting St Michael the Archangel Church and hearing the wonderful acoustics, he is looking forward to bringing his show to Malhamdale.

"He will also be singing songs by Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Cat Stevens, Kris Kristofferson, Gordon Lightfoot, Nick Drake, Paul Simon and many others."

An evening with Chris Bannister is at St Michael's Church, Kirkby Malham on Saturday, November 9 at 7.30pm. Tickets £15 from: www.trybooking.com/uk/DVZB and also on the door. More at: https://www.kirkbymalhamchurch.org/
