MOTORISTS are facing lengthy diversions due to the temporary closure of the A59 at West Marton.

The road, which closed earlier today (Wednesday) will be closed between 9.30am and 3.30pm today, tomorrow (Thursday) and Friday, and on Monday and possibly Tuesday next week, weather permitting.

North Yorkshire Council is replacing road markings from West Marton up to the border of Lancashire, heading towards Gisburn. Tomorrow and Friday, contractors will also be re-surfacing the deteriorated surface of the road at the West Marton crossroads.

Diversions are in place via the A65 to Hellifield, and motorists can also choose to take the A56 from the Broughton roundabout to Barnoldswick and Bracewell to re-join the A59, although the route is not suitable for heavy traffic.

Local traffic has however been thwarted in taking the Bank Newton road to Gisburn, following its closure by Lancashire County Council.

The council, which shares a boundary with North Yorkshire Council on old Gisburn road, has closed the road at the A59 up to the county boundary. It says the urgent closure, which is up until Friday (October 25) is needed 'due to dangerous levels of deterioration in the carriageway'.
