A 35-year old man has been sentenced for repeatedly breaking in to Settle Victoria Hall over two months.

Wayne Harvey, of no fixed abode, appeared at York Magistrates Court yesterday (Monday) accused of six counts of burglary and two of attempted burglary at the entertainment venue, the world's oldest, still functioning music hall.

Harvey targeted the venue in September and October stealing £480 in cash as well as drink and food.

He has now been ordered by magistrates to keep away from Settle Victoria Hall, Kirkgate for a period of 12 months and to pay compensation.

The 35-year old was arrested by police following an investigation, charged with burglary and remained in custody ahead of his appearance in court this week.

At York Magistrates Court yesterday, Harvey admitted burglary on October 15 when he stole £100 in cash; and on October 24 when he stole £300 in cash. He also admitted burglary on September 25 when he stole £80 in cash, and on September 26 when he took food and drink to a undetermined value.

He further admitted attempted burglary with intent to steal at the hall on October 9 and on October 8; and burglary with intent to steal on October 6.

Harvey was given a 12-month community order by magistrates and ordered to not enter Settle Victoria Hall for a year.

Magistrates, taking his guilty pleas into account, ordered him to attend up to 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days. He will also have to pay Settle Victoria Hall £180 in compensation. There was no order made by the court for costs or a surcharge, with compensation to the entertainment venue taking priority.

Following the arrest, Craven Neighbourhood Policing Inspector, Julie Earnshaw, thanked everyone who had assisted officers with their investigation.

"This is a fantastic result for Victoria Hall, who have been repeatedly targeted over the last two months.

"The offender targeted the office, stealing the takings from shows, making a huge impact on the small venue."
