The Rotary Club of Skipton has stepped in to pay for repairs to a millennium footbridge.

The bridge, in popular public space The Wilderness, was smashed by vandals over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend. But now, the Rotary club has stepped in with an offer to pay for repairs up to £1,000.

John Dawson, chairman of the Rotary Club of Skipton’s Community and Environ-ment Committee, said the club wanted to do what it could to help.

“The footpath through the Wilderness is very popular and well-used,” he said.

“We wanted to help the Friends of The Wilderness get it reopened as soon as possible and I’m delighted that we have been able to come forward so quickly with the offer to pay for the repairs.”

Mr Dawson said the area was an important part of the Skipton Millennium Walk, which Rotary helped create.

“This gave us another very good reason to help get the bridge repaired,” he said.

The bridge, which crosses Wilderness Beck, was put up by the town’s Civic Society in 2000 to commemorate the new millennium.
