Supermarket giant Tesco issued a recall for a popular food item after it found it had a health risk to customers.

The brand is recalling Tesco's own Plant Chef 2 Meat-Free Burgers with Melting Middle over concerns it may be a ‘burn risk’.

The vegan item has ingredients including gherkins and mustard and has been popular among customers.

However, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has warned that Tesco burgers “may maintain a high temperature once cooked” and, therefore, could burn customers who eat them.

Tesco is now telling customers who brought the burgers not to eat them and to return them to stores to receive a full refund.

Tesco recalls vegan ‘melt in the middle’ burgers

Notifying customers of the recall, Tesco shared: “We’re recalling all batches of Tesco Plant Chef 2 Meat-Free Burgers with Melting Middle 240g, due to the centre of the burgers maintaining a high temperature once cooked. This could potentially cause a burn risk to customers when eating.”

The vegan burgers have been popular among the vegan community as the BBC shared that the Tesco item appeared on blogs and Facebook groups at the end of June.

However, despite their nice taste, customers shared that the middle of the burger was like ‘lava’ adding to the FSA concern.

One customer said: “They are nice but careful when eating as the middle is like eating the sun!”

What is a product recall?

If there is a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold, then it might be 'withdrawn' (taken off the shelves) or 'recalled' (when customers are asked to return the product).

The FSA issues Product Withdrawal Information Notices and Product Recall Information Notices to let consumers and local authorities know about problems associated with food.

In some cases, a 'Food Alert for Action' is issued.

This provides local authorities with details of specific actions to be taken on behalf of consumers.
