I WOULD like to thank the 3,446 people who voted Green in Skipton and Ripon at this general election. This represented 6.4 per cent of the vote and a significant increase. I was particularly grateful to the many former Conservative voters who selected me as their choice.

Nationally, the Green Party now has four MPs and received almost two million votes. It is a strange election in which the Labour Party vote drops nationally and yet they win a super majority. It is hard to understand how 34 per cent of the votes translates to 64 per cent of the seats and how a party that wins little more than a third of the votes can justify being quite so dominant.

Perhaps it is time for the country to move beyond its current crude first past the post system.
