WITH regards to the average speed cameras (Average speed cameras to 'go live' this summer, Craven Herald online, July 8). These must have proved a great success on all roads that they are installed. Regardless of cost. They will have saved lives. (Proactive)
But North Yorkshire’s policy is reactive. Collecting revenue from motorists with camera vans tucked away after the danger areas. Why spend tens of thousands to reap minimal income when you can spend little and collect tens of thousands in fines.
Cash Cows comes to mind.

A spokesperson for the York and North Yorkshire Office for Policing, Fire, Crime and Commissioning, said with regard to where revenue from cameras go: "It will depend on the outcome that the driver chooses to take. For Speed Awareness Courses, the cost recovery for Police is £45 (approximately half the course cost). All the funds raised via a Conditional Offer however (points and fine - when an offence cannot be dealt with by means of education) go straight to Central Government/Treasury."
