WATCHING a programme on television recently made me think that humans are being discriminated against in the rush to re-wild.
The presenter was explaining how because beavers had been introduced to an area the land was returning to its ‘natural’ state. Unless beavers have evolved a fair bit in the intelligence stakes in the last few years I’m pretty sure that the concept of rewilding is not something they chat about in their lodges at night.
All the beavers are doing is altering the landscape to fit their way of life making it conducive for their survival and the survival of their progeny.
All the various ecology groups see this as a wonderful state of affairs and I agree to some extent. I’m sure the likes of Chris Packham will herald the beaver as an amazing animal.
So what are human beings but animals. So is a farmer utilising the land to the best of his ability to provide a sustainable lifestyle for himself and his descendants whilst also feeding his fellow man not also an amazing creature? Why is the beaver lauded for its use of the land, but the farmer doing the very same thing is demonised? Doesn’t make sense does it.
