FIVE local rugby stars represented Yorkshire last weekend with both the Ladies and Men's team playing in Doncaster.
The first game was between Yorkshire Ladies and Cheshire Ladies and prominent in the Yorkshire team was Skipton Roses player Sarah Pate. She had an outstanding game but could not stop Cheshire running out as winners.
Yorkshire Men then took on Cheshire Men and there was four of Wharfedale’s finest wearing the white rose. Rob Baldwin and Oscar Canny started the match and were both influential in establishing a strong lead. Off the bench, in the second half, Sam Gaudie and Madison Hunting, kept the pressure on and Yorkshire ran out comfortable winners. It was also good to see Dan Scarborough (ex-Wharfedale and England) coaching Yorkshire.
Next week sees the big Battle of the Roses for the men, with a trip to Twickenham the reward for the winners, when Yorkshire take on Lancashire. Both counties have played two and won two and stand on ten points; Yorkshire have a much superior points difference. The game is at Sedgley Park on Saturday 20 May at 3pm.
The ladies, also taking on Lancashire, travel to Liverpool St. Helen’s Ground on Sunday 21 May with a 3pm kick-off.
