Sutton Bowling Club and Broughton Road suffered terrible nights in the Slaters Arms Clarkson Cup first round.

Both clubs were fielding three teams, but, surprisingly, none progressed to the second round.

Sutton A, playing off scratch, found the concession of 45 points to Colne Cricket Club too much.

Although having six winners, Sutton A’s wins were not big enough and they went down 190-172.

Sutton B had to give 35 points start to a strong-looking Settle B. Sutton had seven winners but once again could not find the big-margin wins and were always in trouble after a good start by Settle B, who in-creased their lead after four games and went on to win 254-229.

It was a big ask for Sutton C to meet Lund Park A receiving just 25, but with all three teams playing they had limited resources to call on and could only provide one winner, Lund Park A triumphing 250-189.

Broughton Road found themselves in a similar position to Sutton, but the C team, stretched the most, nearly got the better of Addingham B, going down 291-286.

Broughton Road B got off to the worst possible start against Silsden PF B, with the front four all losing and two getting low scores. With just two winners, Road B lost 264-213.

Broughton Road A should have been able to give Second Division Addingham A 35 points but ‘dingham’ pair Mike and Brenda Simmons were on top form and, with two other winners, it was curtains for the ‘Roaders’ 239-225.

Keighley A got the better of their B team with eight winners to comfortably pull back a 55-point deficit and win 214-189, though they did have a couple of slip ups as Jean Smith and Steve Morris both won.

The tightest match on the night was at Broughton Road as Cross Hills A just got the better of Gargrave A, the score of 231-222 not telling the story.

Two winners for Gargrave kept their handicap of 30 points intact but Cross Hills quietly pulled back the points until Gargrave skipper Paul Drinkall got himself in a position to win the match.

He led Philip Dowgill 20-11, but it all went wrong and Dowgill slipped off the hook to get the points needed and eventually win 21-20 to put Cross Hills through. Cross Hills B also had a close game, being pushed all the way by Silsden PF C, who nearly held on to their 40- points start. They had just one winner, W Harrison (21-13) but they had some really good scores and only lost 277-272.

Cross Hills C nearly made it a treble as they made Whinfield A pull out all the stops to get home 267-259.

Colne Legion A left their league form behind to put up eight winners against Lund Park B and post a big 254-205 win 254-205.

Two First Division teams met at Grassington, with Devon A getting the better of Silsden, 21-5 wins for R Baker and M Lee proving the difference in a 203-182 score.

Devon C also won in style against Rolls Royce 275-228, six winners for the Third Division side being enough to counter big victories for Eleanor and David Turner.

Oakworth continue to prove they are very capable in handicap com-petitions, and Craven B could not reproduce their good league form.

Three winners and ten points start was not enough for under-strength Craven B, who lost 258-227. There was better news for Craven A, who scored a full house against Steeton B, who got a 75-point start but lost 250-225.

The Inter-District Veterans' team were a little disappointed with their result against Leeds.

Skipton won overall 32-24, with four winners at Morley but lost on aggregate.

Best winners were Colin Jeffrey, Barry Turnbull and Bob Scott. At home, they had six winners with best scores Doug Stone and special reserve Gordon Whitham, who won 21-3.

Their next match is against Bradford on Friday, June 18, with the home leg at Broughton.

The League Veterans’ Handicap, supported by former president Roy Sanderson, takes place on Friday (start and scratch 1.30pm, four to qualify from each green for the final on Friday, July 9, with the draw for greens as follows: Steeton: D Stone, M Harling, A Ripley, M Mitchell, K Coppen, G Webster, J Greenbank, A Pennington, L Buxton, F Morris, P Clarke, T Hargreaves, C C Jeffrey, D Burgess, C Wortley, R Sanderson. Sutton: P Smith, A Harris, A Akers, S Owen, B Green, W A Phillips, M Swarek, M Haley, P Deigh-ton, D Hemsley, W Burnett, D Jacques, L Hubbock, T Langstoth, R Stephenson.

Cross Roads continued their good Yorkshire Cup performances with a win over Brighouse Sports at Northowram.

The full result is not to hand but Richard Hargreaves had to win the last match on the green and he duly obliged with a 21-12 win to secure the match by five points, Cononley had a bye to the next round.

Broughton Road met a good side in Moldgreen Cons at Guiseley in the Henry Taylor Cup, with just four winners for the Skipton side, the opposition were just too good and put a end to the ‘Roaders’ cup run for another season.

Settle Bowling Club progressed in the Eric Hutchinson Cup with a very easy win against Northowram at Pudsey BC.

With nine winners, the match was never in doubt and had a final score of 231-167. Craven join Settle in the next round after getting a bye.

In the Derrick Radley Trophy, Skipton Whinfield had another bye. At this rate they may reach the final without playing.

The Hills Supplies qualifying round is at Broughton Road this Friday (start 6.30pm) and there are two qualifying places but still more entries are needed. If you would like to enter, please contact Peter Haworth (01756-790902).

The Worth Valley Ogden Trophy was held last Sunday at Craven Bowling Club, and it was a home green member's success when Ian Barnard beat Andy Tate 21-8.

Peter Clark, who plays for Devon and Cross Roads, put up a good performance last Saturday. After Yorkshire Cup success with Cross Roads, he moved onto Cleckheaton Sports for a qualifying round in the John Smiths Classic, he first beat Roy Nicholson(Halifax) 21-6, next James Davidson(Thongsbridge) 21-17 and finally qualified for the final, beating Martin Gilpin(Kendal) 21-17.

He joins some top bowlers in the final on Saturday, July 3 (start 5.30pm).
