There was no argument about who won the nearest to the 14th hole competition on Captain’s Day at Ghyll Golf Club.
Ray Duckworth holed in one at the 132-yard hole – named the Curlew’s Cry – on his was to winning the prize for the best back nine with 21 points.
The hole in one was one of the highlights of a memorable day for captain Clifford Hillary.
The overcast weather could have been kinder, especially to those players caught in the afternoon deluge, but the excellent condition of the course more than compensated.
Indeed, it turned out very much to be a family affair with Carl Hillary, Clifford’s nephew, taking the Captain’s Prize with a score of 41 stableford points.
The remaining places went respectively to Ian Heald (40), Wayne Rowley (40), Jack Farnhill (39), and Colin Maud (38).
Scott Boardman (20) was victorious on the front 9.
Jamie Fox won the mid six prize with an astonishing 18 points.
Ivan Shackleton placed his tee shot within 83 inches to be nearest the pin on the the Greenberfield hole.
On the Saturday Sam Bugler, a 13 year old student at West Craven High School, whose favourite musical instrument is in fact the guitar, lifted the Captain's Junior Prize with 44 points from Brandon Cocker (36).
Ghyll member Bill Lee recorded his second hole in one on the 175 yard County Brook hole in the recent Seniors Championship.
It came 26 years after his first ace on Ghyll's first hole.
In the company of Bob Bugler he used a 23 degree hybrid club and saw his ball rattle the pin and disappear down the hole to his obvious delight.
Skipton Golf Club Captain Colin Chapman supplied the prizes and the weather as a record 160 members turned out to support the Captain’s Day Medal.
The golf course was in splendid condition and some tricky pin positions were in place but this didn’t seem to deter many as some great scores were recorded. Division One was won by junior Harry McEneaney with 75-12-63.
Tom Willman with 72-8-64 was second and another junior having a good season, Michael O'Rourke, took third with 74-8-66.
Best gross went to the ever consistent Paul Pethybridge with a one under par 69.
In Division Two a card play off gave Gerald Mishloney the honours with 86-25-61, just edging out on the back nine Paul Stott who also carded a 86-25-61.
Bernard Boylan took third place with 91-27-64.
Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club President, Stirling Hulme enjoyed a good day for his annual President’s Day celebrations There was a full field of men, women and seniors all playing together in competition.
Despite the damp conditions scoring was good with Chris Devitt and Elaine Robinson taking the major honours.
Kirkby Lonsdale now looks forward to the Festival of Golf week. The week will consist of a seniors open, a mixed open, a ladies team event, a gents team event and will culminate with the annual Pro Am. These events run from June 21 to 26 are all well subscribed .
Low scoring has been the order of the day for Settle men in this week’s medal competitions.
On Thursday, Colin Green returned a net 68 to win and see his handicap drop to 14, while on Sunday the scores were even lower.
The clear winner of the Riseley Trophy was Simon Murgatroyd, who was rewarded for all the practice he has been doing (83-19-64).
Keith Gerrard, came second (84-18-66) and Gerry Allsopp (90-21-69) played solidly to secure third spot.
