Mary Wilkinson’s struck gold in the team at the European Mountain Running Championships in Turkey and it helped erase the disappointment of being pipped for an indivifual medal.
The Long Preston runner finished fourth in the individual race – her best- performance in the championships – which were staged in the historical setting of Pamukkale World Heritage site. She finished just three seconds off third place and was a mere 15 seconds down on the winner, but her fine run, plus a sixth-place finish for her Bingley Harriers Emma Clayton , and a tremendous tenth place for Katie Walshaw, of Holmfirth Harriers, saw Great Britain take the team prize ahead of Italy and Russia.
Wilkinson’s gold medal helped erase the pain and anguish she suffered earlier his yearwhen she sustained a stress fracture of the foot.
